In the view from the Tiny MCE toolbar it appears as text {field 1} etc.
In JCE from the Preview tab of the editor (next to editor and code) I get the blank space described in the first post.
I made the site online because in offline mode I couldn't use the Preview button in Articles. Used this and the fields are OK. So the issue seems to be editor related.
